Some cultural differences between Japan and the West
>Westerners will usually not visit the hospital just because they have a cold. We take medicine, rest, and get better by ourselves. We also don't wear face masks. It is very normal to keep tissues and use those when you need to. Westerners will also use their sick days when they are actually sick.
>Western restaurants usually do not give you a warm towel to wash your face and hands before you eat.
>Most gas stations in the West are self-service.

Language
Heirarchical language is not as important in the West as it is in Japan. For example:
English
Friend: Wanna go to a movie?
Acquaintance: Wanna go to a movie?
Co-worker/equal: Wanna go to a movie?
Boss: Would you like to go see a movie with me?
Boss's boss: If you're not busy, would you like to go see a movie with me?

School Culture
American schools operate differently from Japanese schools. It goes like this:
Pre-Kindergarten ~4 years old
Kindergarten ~5 years old
Elementary school
--1st Grade ~6 years old
--2nd Grade
--3rd Grade
--4th Grade
--5th Grade
Middle school
--6th Grade ~12 years old
--7th Grade
--8th Grade
High school
--9th Grade, Freshman year ~15 years old
--10th Grade, Sophomore year
--11th Grade, Junior year
--12th Grade, Senior year
College
--Freshman year ~19 years old
--Sophomore year
--Junior year
--Senior year
Western students do not need to clean up their school after class is over.
At most Western schools, students do not eat lunch in their classrooms.
Western students do not need to change into indoor shoes at all.
Western schools tend to have much more homework and much larger textbooks than Japanese schools. However, Japanese students have a lot more pressure on them when it comes to tests. Japanese high school is harder than American high school, but American colleges are more difficult than Japanese colleges.
American students do not have only one test to get into college. Unlike Japanese colleges, who each have their own exams, American colleges accept standardized exams. There are the SATs, the ACTs, APs, and SAT IIs. Each test only takes about 4 or 5 hours on one day. Entering college is like submitting a resume for a job. Your test scores, club activities, sports, honors, and other factors are a part of your college application. Many colleges also require a student to submit an essay and a statement of why they want to attend that college.
I applied to 5 colleges and got accepted by 3 of them.

Driving
Each American state has its own driving laws and driver's license.
Until recently, most American states allowed drivers to be as young as 16. I got my driver's license at 16. Now, 18 is the normal limit for most states.
Everyone except the British drives on the right side of the road. Well, and Japan.
In many places, when the light is red, it is legal to make a right turn. This is called "right on red."
In the US and the UK, people can pay extra to get special license plates that spell out words. For example, instead of a license plate that says 2QB3-068D, you could have a license plate that says CUPCAKE.
