MOONSHINE
Welcome to the Moonshine section of K-S. As I said on the home page, this section is called Moonshine because it is a collection of the things Sunshine misses out on. This, I hope, will help you develop a more dynamic and fun English experience.
In 1920, the American government banned the sale of alcohol for drinking, starting an era called Prohibition. Americans, however, are not too fond of rules, especially when it comes to drinking. Many places secretly sold beer and liquor underground, and the police had a hard time keeping up.
In the South, things got even crazier! Some people would hide small bottles of whiskey in their boots in order to avoid being caught. They were called "bootleggers" because that is where they hid their booze. This coined the term "bootlegging," which today means to make an illegal copy of something. In Texas, people would alter their cars so they could hide and carry a lot of alcohol. Unfortunately, the weight of so much alcohol made the car drive differently, and the cops could find them. So, these drivers needed a fast and powerful car if they were going to get away from the police. Many of them modified their cars to make them faster. After they made their delivery, many of these drivers would then race each other in their fast cards. This is how NASCAR began and automobile racing caught on.
At this time, many places in the South were very sparsely populated. There were lots of forests and swamps that were difficult to penetrate. People who lived in these backwoods could make their own alcohol and sell it in nearby towns. It was a risky business, and the police were on the lookout. So many of these people made their liquor at night when the moon was shining bright in the sky. For that reason, this homemade alcohol is called "moonshine." Making moonshine was an act of rebellion in the name of freedom to have a good time. That is what this section is about. You are free to have fun with English, no textbook required! Also, moonshine is known to be very, very strong, so be careful!

Developing Your English
As your ability in a language grows, it can be useful to expand your knowledge of it. This section will help correct mistakes in English, help your English sound educated, and help you relax into fun and casual speech.

Language-Culture
There is a deep connection between language and the environment in which it is used. People use English in very distant places all over the world, and English changes a little bit depending on where you are. This section will help shed some light on the varying forms of English.

Practice Material
YES!
The best way to really learn a language is to use it. In this section, I will upload many of the worksheets, grammar guides, and other classroom materials. If you want extra practice, this is your place.

What's in a Name?
When I studied Spanish, French, and other languages in middle and high school, we would always pick names in that language. It's interesting to learn what kind of meanings we put into names.

If you want to check certain words in English or Japanese, I have links to two different web dictionaries.
