Why Japan?
This is a long story.
When I entered high school at 14 years old, I looked at myself carefully. I tried to find out what kind of person I was. I was not in good shape physically. There were a lot of things I did not know much about. I did not read a lot. And instead of being good at something, I was just "okay" at a lot of things. I knew I needed to change.
I made a promise to myself. Every day I would become a little better than I was the day before. I would know a little more about something. I would be a little stronger, a little faster. Just a little bit smarter. I began to read a lot, and I started training in kung fu.
I read books about all kinds of things--history, philosophy, physics, religion, culture, literature. As part of that, I started to read about Matsuo Basho and Kobayashi Issa. I also read about bushido, aikido, samurai, and kendo. Out of curiosity, I started watching anime and Kurosawa movies. I admired Toshiro Mifune.
In 2005, I came to Mizusawa in Iwate for 6 weeks of home stay. I finally got to experience Japanese culture and find out what it's like going to a Japanese high school. Very different from anime, by the way. If it were an anime, my parents would die in a car crash; I'd lose my memory; I'd have a cute non-blood-related younger sister to take care of me; and I'd get a harem at school without doing anything to earn such glory. Anyway, the experience was so good, I decided that I would study Japanese culture in college.
And so I did. I studied Japanese literature, Japanese history, Japanese language, and Japanese culture for four years. Turns out, a degree in that is not very useful. At all. So I decided that I need to be much, much better at Japanese and know much more than I do. I had to know what it's like to live and work in Japan. I had to find a way to be worth something to a Japanese or American company. I also wanted to give back to the people who had given me such a good experience.
I also wanted to help the people who have suffered since the disaster of March 2011. When I heard about the earthquake and saw the videos, I almost cried. I knew I had to come back.
